Abstract:
Health is the most important commodity anybody can possess. No matter where you live, no matter what you do, you need to be healthy to live a satisfying life. Hospitals are the places where to go whenever one’s health is not well. Although doctors make us feel better using their knowledge, hospitals and doctors need to be supported by various medical devices as well as medical informatics systems for them to accomplish their goals at their best. With this new era of technology and science, more adequate and new systems have been created to reinforce patient-doctor relationship. Nowadays, hospitals use modern systems for all their activities. In other words, most hospitals use computer-based patients’ records. Therefore, this brings up many other issues such as protection of standards procedures when it comes to the integrity of the medical files, protection of personal data; being able to make a secure transfer of patients’ data from one health unit to another, or from one hospital to another, etc. To answer these preoccupations, Health Information Systems (HIS) that are adapted to these needs have been invented over the years. International standards for these systems have been defined, and universal languages for the medical entities are in use. This study will address the current challenges still overshadowing data storage, data exchange between 2 separate departments of the same hospital, but mostly those challenges surrounding data exchange between 2 separate hospitals. Using the Military Medical Academy University Teaching Hospital im. WAM - Central Veterans' Hospital in Lodz Poland (Uniwersytecki Szpital Kliniczny Im. Wojskowej Akademii Medycznej w Lodzi, Polska) “WAM Hospital here after”, this study will explore data storage, data exchange and data recovery inside one hospital, using their radiology department as an example. My conclusion will show that while system for data exchange between health units in one hospital using a comprehensive and an integrated “medical” information system (Health Information System HIS) is not a myth anymore, there still are many challenges ahead such as the standardization of the systems, the lack of internet network connection in some parts of the world, or the high cost of these programs. Regarding the system for data exchange between separate hospitals, there are still lots of challenges concerning sharing of medical information securely using online Health information Exchange (HIE).
